Sora Is Discontinued: Is Veo 3.1 a Practical Alternative?

Veo3o1 Editorial Team

OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026, and says the Sora API will be discontinued on September 24, 2026. That change creates a practical question for creators who used Sora for short concept shots: can Veo 3.1 replace the part of the workflow they actually need?

The useful answer is not a blanket yes or no. The two products expose different interfaces and controls, and no migration reproduces every feature exactly. Veo 3.1 can be a practical alternative when your priority is generating short shots from text, exact frame endpoints, or visual references. It is less direct when the old workflow depended on Sora-specific editing tools or an existing Sora library.

OpenAI's current Sora discontinuation notice should be the source of truth for Sora export, deletion, refund, and API dates. This guide focuses on rebuilding a creation workflow rather than preserving a discontinued product.

What you need to replace

Before choosing another generator, separate the old workflow into jobs:

  1. turning a written idea into a new shot;
  2. animating an existing still image;
  3. controlling how a shot begins and ends;
  4. keeping a person, product, or visual world recognizable;
  5. producing landscape or vertical clips;
  6. extending or enhancing a selected result;
  7. storing and organizing finished media.

No single checkbox answers all seven. A useful migration starts by identifying which two or three jobs matter most.

Where Veo 3.1 fits

Veo3o1 exposes three current Veo 3.1 input modes:

  • Text to Video creates a scene from a prompt without an image.
  • First & Last Frames accepts one image to anchor the opening or two images to guide both endpoints.
  • Reference Images accepts one to three images with Lite or Fast to guide a subject, product, object, or visual identity.

Depending on the mode and model, the interface offers 4, 6, or 8-second duration; 16:9, 9:16, or Auto aspect ratio; and 720p, 1080p, or 4K resolution. The exact eligible combination and credit reservation are visible before submission.

Google's official Veo material highlights both first-and-last-frame control and reference-image workflows. The Veo 3.1 overview and Gemini API Veo guide are useful upstream references, although the controls available in a particular application can differ.

Rebuild a text-to-video workflow

For a text-driven shot, do not paste an entire scene outline into one short generation. Convert the idea into a single camera setup:

Subject + one action + environment + shot size + camera movement + lighting

Example:

A lone field researcher closes a weathered notebook beside a wind-swept lake.
Medium-wide shot, slow lateral camera move, overcast morning light, restrained
natural motion, water and coat moving in the same wind direction.

Generate a low-cost draft first. Check subject readability, motion direction, camera behavior, and timing before increasing model or resolution cost. The Veo 3.1 prompt guide explains this shot-based structure in more detail.

Rebuild image-guided shots

If the old workflow began from a still image, decide whether you need an endpoint or an identity reference.

Use First & Last Frames when the uploaded composition should be the actual opening image, or when a second image defines the end. Write the prompt as a path between frames: what moves, how the camera travels, and what must remain stable.

Use Reference Images when the model may create a new composition but the person, product, costume, vehicle, or visual system should remain recognizable. Choose references that agree on color, shape, identity, and styling. The First & Last Frame vs Reference Images comparison helps separate these two intentions.

Replace project features with a simple production system

A generator is only one part of a video workflow. If a discontinued product previously held storyboards, variants, or project history, create a small external production structure:

  • one folder per campaign or story;
  • a shot list with aspect ratio and duration;
  • saved prompts and seed values;
  • reference images with documented usage rights;
  • downloaded drafts and approved masters;
  • notes recording the model, mode, and resolution used.

This structure reduces dependence on any provider interface. Veo3o1 result links are temporary and new videos remain visible in My Works for up to 14 days, so download anything you intend to keep.

When Veo 3.1 is a strong alternative

Veo 3.1 is worth testing when you need:

  • short text-to-video shots;
  • an exact starting frame or a guided transition between two frames;
  • one to three images for character or product reference;
  • explicit landscape or 9:16 vertical output;
  • a visible choice between draft and higher-cost model presets;
  • 720p iteration with 1080p or 4K delivery options;
  • separate extend or enhancement actions on eligible results.

It may not be a direct replacement when you need a discontinued Sora-specific editing interface, an old Sora project library, or a feature that is not present in the current generator controls. Test the exact job before moving a complete production pipeline.

A low-risk migration test

Choose one representative shot rather than an entire campaign. Save the old prompt, source image, intended aspect ratio, and acceptance criteria. Then:

  1. rewrite the prompt for one short camera setup;
  2. select Text, First & Last Frames, or Reference Images;
  3. create a 720p draft with the lowest suitable preset;
  4. compare subject stability, motion, timing, and composition;
  5. change only one variable for the second attempt;
  6. move to a higher resolution only after the direction works;
  7. download and label the accepted result.

This test gives you evidence about your own content instead of relying on a generic model ranking.

Start with the workflow, not the brand name

Sora's discontinuation is a reminder that a durable process should keep prompts, reference assets, shot decisions, and master files outside a single generator. Veo 3.1 can cover many short-form generation jobs, especially when first/last frames or reference images are important, but the right decision depends on the exact shot.
